APPLICABLE RULES: The event is sanctioned and shall be conducted under Rules 1040, 1070 and US Figure Skating Guidelines of the current U.S. Figure Skating Rulebook, as a Special Competition. Generally, U.S. Figure Skating rules for non-qualifying competitions apply. Exceptions are as stated in this announcement. 2. ELIGIBILITY TO COMPETE: a. U.S. singles contestants must have placed first, second, third or fourth in a contested theatrical event of a sanctioned competition in the twelve months preceding June 25, 2007, or in the immediately prior National Showcase. This includes interpretive, artistic, spotlight and showcase events. Representatives of other governing bodies, Duets (Pairs), Mini-Production Ensembles and Production Ensembles need not qualify. Skaters from other governing bodies must enter events at their ages and as closely approximating the specified test/ability levels as possible. The referee’s decision will be final. b. All entry qualifications must be attained as of June 25, 2007; subsequent changes in age or test level will not affect entry. c. Those eligible under U.S. Figure Skating Rules, reinstated skaters and representatives of other governing bodies may compete. d. Juniors or Seniors whose qualifying events have been canceled for lack of entries may submit a testimonial letter from the qualifying competition chair or registrar in fulfillment of qualification. 3. SHOWCASE EVENTS--BASIS OF JUDGING: a. Performances will be judged for theatrical and artistic qualities, from an entertainment standpoint. b. Technical skating skill and difficulty will not be rewarded as such; however, skating must be the major element of the performance and of sufficient quality to support the theatrical elements chosen. c. Unintended falls, poorly executed skating elements and obvious losses of control will reduce contestants’ marks. d. Jump difficulty is not rewarded in showcase, therefore jumps, if choreographed, should be those performed with style, flow and confidence. Jumps should not be used but as the choreography requires. e. Theatrical elements evaluated will include: Energy, poise, acting, pantomime, eye contact, choreography, form, extension and the use of costumes, ice and props. f. One performance mark incorporating the 6.0 scoring system will be assigned each performance by each judge. No technical skating mark will be used. Any overtime penalties will be posted with the results. Only the top five places in Parades of Champions will be posted. 4. OFFICIALS: Officials will be selected from the U.S. Figure Skating lists and those of other governing bodies. 5. EVENTS: Singles skaters, once qualified for an event, may enter any or all events for which they meet age and test requirements. Singles need not qualify separately for multiple events. Duets need not qualify but must meet test requirements stated in No. 6. No qualification is required for group events. a. Singles Events will be: i. Dramatic Entertainment: A serious, emotional, artistic interpretation, ii. Light Entertainment: Any performance not serious enough to be considered dramatic, iii. Extemporaneous Improvisation: A performance choreographed by the unaided contestant during a 45 minute, off ice warmup to music supplied by the organizers. The music for extemporaneous will be approximately one minute in length. A threeminute, full ice warm-up will also be provided in which the music will be played twice. All contestants in a group will use the same music. Warm-ups will be conducted under house lights; competition will take place under spotlights so far as possible. iv. Skaters may enter any or all of these single events at the level for which they are qualified. b. Duet and Ensemble Events will be: i. Duet: A theatrical/artistic performance by any two contestants. ii. Mini Production Ensemble: A theatrical/artistic performance by three to seven contestants. iii. Production Ensemble: A theatrical/artistic performance by more than seven contestants. Theatre On Ice teams are eligible to compete in this category. iv. Skaters may enter any or all of these events. However, each skater may enter only one of each type of event (e.g. one duet, and/or one mini production, and/or one production.) c. Singles contestants may enter events only at their ages and test levels as of June 25, 2007. The highest ranked member of a duet determines duet levels. Ensembles are without test requirements. national showcase: 2007 www.iscfc.org 3 6. CLASSIFICATION and PERFORMANCES: 7. SPECIFICS: a. There is no minimum time requirement for any event. b. Events will not be segregated by gender. c. There will be a 0.2 deduction for each 5 seconds in excess of the maximum performance and prop placement time. d. Timing starts with the first motion of the body and ends when motion stops. e. Props and scenery must be placed and removed by single and duet contestants within one minute; by ensemble contestants within two minutes. No assistance is allowed; violations will be penalized .2 for each 5 seconds excess time or for assistance. Posted results will indicate any such deductions. f. A 25-word or shorter description of the performance should be included (see entry form). This will be included in the skater’s introductory announcement. g. Extemporaneous improvisation performances will be approximately one minute in duration to facilitate choreography. h. A random skating order will be used in all rounds except the Parades of Champions. Those Parades will skate in an order approved by the Referee to meet the principles: Generally, very young skaters will perform earlier, lower level skaters will perform earlier and similar events will not be clustered. Time for needed costume changes will be considered so far as possible. 8. WARMUPS: a. Duets and Singles contestants will warm up backstage (15 X 85 ft.) for at least 3 minutes. b. Extemporaneous warm-ups of 3 minutes on performance ice will include playing of the music twice. c. Ensembles under seven persons will warm up at least 3 minutes backstage. d. Ensembles of 7 or more may warm up backstage or request performance ice for 3 minutes if a Mini-Production or 5 minutes if a Production Ensemble. Requests should be handed to the Registrar before competing. 9. GROUP SIZES & FINAL ROUNDS: Maximum sizes of initial rounds will normally be 15 contestants. Events exceeding 15 contestants will include initial and final rounds to determine a champion for that event. With two groups, the four highest placed skaters will compete in the final; with three or four groups, the three highest placed skaters; with five or six groups, the two highest placed; with more than six groups, the winners only.
